Gallican Psalter with Canticles, Litany, and Office of the Dead
Flanders, c. 1270

Historiated Initial D with a Fool Holding a Club. Within this letter D opening Psalm 52, a man holds an orange club and a loaf of bread. He is the fool described in the first line of the psalm: "The fool said in his heart: There is no God."
