Gallican Psalter with Canticles
Germany, Augsburg, c. 1520
Nikolaus Bertschi, c. 1480/90-1541/42

Scenes from the Life of King David. Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria (14931550) commissioned this Psalter from the professional illuminator Nikolaus Bertschi in about 1520. David plays a psaltery in the initial B, but the miniatures surrounding the text have a strong military theme. David confronts Goliath at the top of the page, while David's rebellious son, Absalom, hangs from a tree in the lower border.

The Library Company of Philadelphia, MS 4, fol. 1
