Creussen, a small city in present-day Bavaria, flourished as a stoneware center from the early 1600s. This is an early example of a popular type of ware showing the twelve apostles standing, here decorated with colored enamel that was applied after firing. The inspiration for the use of such color may have come from contemporary German enameled glass.
