Dubonnet

Suzy Frelinghuysen (Estelle Condit Frelinghuysen)

American, 1911 - 1988

Suzy Frelinghuysen's work changed dramatically after her marriage in 1935 to the abstract painter, collector, and art critic George Lovett Kingsland Morris, cousin of art collector and artist Albert Eugene Gallatin. Her husband's enthusiasm for the paintings and collages of Picasso, Braque, and other modern masters encouraged Freylinghuysen to abandon her previous interest in American scene realism in favor of an abstract style reminiscent of the lucid Synthetic Cubism of Juan Gris. Dubonnet is typical of her mature work, in which she deftly incorporated snippings of printed papers, in this case a magazine advertisement for Dubonnet aperitif wine, into her colorful abstract compositions to create some of the most elegant and beautiful collages of the period.
