Fiske Kimball Papers : IV. Historic preservation projects : A. Archaeological Institute of America, Committee on Colonial and National Art in North America
Comprised primarily of correspondence, this subseries documents Kimball's founding of the Archaeological Institute of America's "Committee on Colonial and National Art" for the purpose of fostering historical study of the nation's early monuments and works of art. During its life span from 1916 to 1927, the Committee actively sought to stimulate interest in American art and architecture by granting a small number of fellowships and publishing and delivering papers on related topics. As chairman, Kimball was responsible for recruiting committee members, raising funds, and corresponding regularly with the Archaeological Institute's President and Secretary. In addition, he served on the editorial board of the Institute's publication, Art and Archaeology, and lectured frequently on topics related to the Committee's work. An unrealized goal of the Committee was the undertaking of a national survey of historic buildings along the line of the National Park Service's Historic American Building Survey.
