Women used work tables like this one to store their sewing and needlework. These treasured articles of furniture—moved about the room on castors—were often highly ornamented with lavish carving, figured wood veneers, painted decoration, and other adornments. Philadelphia cabinetmaker Charles H. White made this table early in his long and prolific career.
