Maria Monaci GallengaItalian, 1880 - 1944
While Gallenga’s patterns often evoked those found in medieval and Renaissance art, they were sometimes inspired by East Asian designs as well. This textile’s rich red-orange hue is comparable to the saturated reds found in Chinese red lacquer furniture and vessels, which were particularly fashionable in the 1920s and 1930s, while its stylized willow tree is an adaptation of a common Eastern decorative motif.
