Still Life with Bowls and a Jug

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, Spanish, 1881 - 1973
Robust forms and rich colors give this traditional still life earthy tangibility, while inconsistent lighting and shifting perspectives provide a jolt of energy.
This canvas once held a different image. X-rays reveal that Picasso painted the still life over a recent picture that depicted a standing nude woman rendered in a comparably unpolished and simplified style. The faint outline of the woman’s face is visible in the upper center of the canvas, in the dark space between the jug and the bowl.
