Spinning
Thomas EakinsAmerican, 1844 - 1916
In 1882, Eakins was asked to create two decorative panels for a fireplace mantle in the home of Philadelphia businessman James P. Scott. Eakins based Spinning and Knitting on two earlier watercolors, Homespun and Seventy Years Ago, and in 1883 sent the plaster models to Scott, intending to have the works ultimately carved in stone. However, disputes over cost eventually led Scott to decline the panels. Eakins had the works cast in bronze in 1886.
