Options for returning the sculpture to a more acceptable appearance and removing some of the corrosive weathering crust were reviewed by sculpture conservators at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rodin’s writings on the subjects of surface finish and patination were considered and compared with examples of Rodin’s The Thinker which were never exhibited outdoors.

An example of some of the patination tests used to determine a desirable surface for the weathered bronze. A variety of tests were undertaken to determine how best to resolve the alteration of the weathered surface with a patination that would make the modeling clear again.
