Mid- 17th century
Old Woman Reading
Dominicus van TolDutch (active Leiden), c. 1635 - 1676
A Westerwald stoneware pitcher of about the same date as this painting appears alongside a delicate façon de venise (Venetian style) wine flute, which the pitcher might soon be required to refill. Such refined practices began as elite customs, but were soon absorbed and emulated by the Dutch urban middle classes.
