Takashi Murakami

Japanese, born 1962

Takashi Murakami's stylistic approach to his giant-eyed, mouse-like character Mr. DOB, featured here, exemplifies his "superflat" theory, which recognizes traditional characteristics that appear throughout history in Japanese art, such as shallow space and bold outlines, and that carry over into the current animated cartoons and comics popular with Japanese youth today.
