Patch Box

Image 1 of 21 / 2

The size, weight, and manufacture of this small snuff or patch box is typical of early 18th century design as is the engraved design of the flattened, Tudor rose on the lid. It is similar to one by Boston silversmith, Jeremiah Dummer (1645 - 1718). "A. Cheever" may have been Abigail Cheever (1691 -1778), who married Boston silversmith John Burt (1692 -1745), June 3, 1714. The little box would have been a tenth birthday gift, perhaps from her Aunt, Abigail Cheever, who was admitted a member of the First Church in Boston on December 28, 1679 along with Mrs. Jeremiah Dummer.
