Interior of the Gankirō Teahouse in Yokohama

Utagawa Hiroshige II

Japanese, 1826 - 1869

The two-story central court with a pond of blooming irises featured here provides a glimpse of the luxurious environment of the Gankirö teahouse. The red lacquer bridge over the pond was used as a stage for geisha dances, which visitors could watch from the veranda. Courtesans are shown conducting a foreigner across the bridge toward a reception area.
