Foreigner Enjoying Her Children
Utagawa YoshikazuJapanese, active c. 1850-70
Women with children were a common subject in traditional Japanese genre paintings and popular prints, and this theme was continued in printed depictions of foreigners. The artist of this image shows a mother carrying an infant in the crook of her arm, which contrasts with the Japanese practice of carrying a child on one's back.
