Tokuyama Gyokuran

Japanese, 1728 - 1784

Gyokuran learned painting in part from printed Chinese books such as the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual and Eight Types of Picture Albums. These manuals contained many examples of orchids, and while this painting by Gyokuran reflects her study of such books, she nevertheless went on to develop her own style.
