1986
Isaiah Zagar (American, born 1939) Published by Brandywine Workshop, Philadelphia
Zagar is best known for his colorful, public mural mosaics made with mirror, tile, glass, and other materials. His mosaic technique is reflected here in the fractured composition of his self-portrait. As a young man, he spent three years as a volunteer with the Peace Corps in Peru, where he worked with and was inspired by folk artists. His largest work is Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, a massive, outdoor art environment located at 1020 South Street.
