Cloud on the Peak

Mimura Chikuho

Japanese, born 1973

Image 1 of 21 / 2

Using a traditional bamboo weaving technique called irregular plaiting (yatara ami); Chikuho Mimura constructs an intricate structure that begins at the base, billows outwards, and then sinks at the center. A demonstration of complex lines, this work is chaotic and frenzied and yet oddly meditative. An independent artist, Mimura has learned traditional, rustic-style basketry techniques but chooses to create his own contemporary sculptural vessels that are inspired by Japanese culture and the world around him.
