Picnic Box
Artist/maker unknownImage 1 of 21 / 2
It is believed that picnic boxes were first used in the mid-nineteenth century, after being introduced to Korea from Japan; some historical records refer to them as “Japanese picnic boxes.” This example is a Korean version from the late Joseon dynasty, with numbered drawers and a door. Its simple, unembellished form exemplifies the period’s characteristically spare and subdued aesthetic.
