Portrait of Thomas Payne with His Family and Friends

1787
Louis François Gérard van der Puyl (Dutch (active France, England, Utrecht, and Amsterdam), 1750–1824)
The seated gentleman wearing spectacles in the center of the painting is Thomas Payne, a famous London bookseller and publisher whose shop in Mewsgate, London, was a gathering place for intellectuals and literary figures. This view of the shop shows family members and friends socializing and playing Whist, a popular eighteenth-century card game. The painter, a Dutch artist who worked in London in the 1780s, is the man standing on the far left.
