Amelia C. Van Buren with a Cat

Two of Eakins's Academy students, Amelia Van Buren and Eva Watson, set aside painting to become accomplished professional photographers, specializing in portraits and figure studies. The two women remained close friends of their teacher and frequent visitors to his household. Although the number of photographs of Van Buren in Eakins's possession and other prints that he sent to friends strongly suggest his authorship, the possibility that Watson may have made the photograph shown here cannot be ruled out.
