God of Longevity (Fukurokujū)
Kano TsunenobuJapanese, 1636 - 1713
Fukurokujū, the god of longevity, is one of the Seven Gods of Fortune and represents the Chinese ideal of happiness. Here the Japanese artist depicts him as a gray-bearded old man, as is the custom among Chinese artists, and shows him holding a fan. The artist, Kanō Naonobu, was an official painter for the shogunal military rulers of Japan.
