About the Coltrane 100 series
The month of September will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of John Coltrane (1926–2026); celebrating one of the most transformative artists in the history of music. A visionary saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, Coltrane expanded the possibilities of jazz through fearless experimentation and an unwavering commitment to artistic excellence. As a city of artists, Philadelphia occupies a singular place in the story of American art and culture and has nurtured generations of innovators whose work reflects resilience and imagination. Along with many others, John Coltrane is woven into the artistic fabric of Philadelphia. Inspired by the A Nation of Artists exhibition and in collaboration with Dr. Anyabwile Love, founder of The John Coltrane Symposium, these events recognize that artistic achievement is inseparable from the communities that sustain it.
