Building Arts and Crafts Communities

The communities of Bryn Athyn and Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and Arden in Delaware were important places for Arts and Crafts artists working in the Philadelphia area, offering a way of living and working collectively outside the industrialized city. Among these artists were Parke Emerson Edwards, Winfred Sumner Hyatt, John Maene, William Lightfoot Price, Donald Stephens, and Margaret Wood, each of whom sought, in their own ways, to realize the Arts and Crafts ideals of learning from nature and integrating art into daily life. Hear from experts on these communities in a panel co-chaired by David Barquist and Colin Fanning, co-curators of the exhibition Workshop of the World: Arts and Crafts in Philadelphia, on view through October 11.

The panel will include Ryan Berley, Curator of the Rose Valley Museum; Brian Henderson, Director of Glencairn Museum; and Barbara Macklem, a member of the Board of Directors of the Arden Craft Shop Museum. Representatives from these communities will also table and share resources about how to visit and learn more about these historic sites and the vibrant communities that still call them home.
