The Barnes Foundation is home to one of the world's finest collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early modern paintings ever assembled by an individual. It represents the lifelong interest of Dr. Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951), a Philadelphia businessman and philanthropist who promoted the study and appreciation of the visual arts. Eighty of the greatest masterpieces from this outstanding collection have been selected for a historic exhibition which marks the first and only time that the works will be on view outside the Barnes Foundation galleries in Merion, PA. This one-time only international tour has been made possible by a recent ruling of the Orphan's Court that gave permission for a select number of paintings to travel while critically needed improvements are made to the 70 year-old gallery designed by noted Philadelphia architect Paul Cret to house the collection. The Philadelphia Museum of Art will be the exhibition's last stop before returning permanently to the Barnes Foundation.
