Louis I. Kahn

Considered by many as the most important architect of his time, Louis Kahn will be the subject of a major international exhibition which will premiere in Philadelphia, his home town. Organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the exhibition will include over 125 drawings, 48 models and 125 photographs and archival material, and will focus on 56 notable public buildings and projects. Notable designs such as the Kimbell Art Museum in Texas, the Salk Institute in California, the Medical Towers at the University of Pennsylvania and the Yale Center for British Art will be encompassed in the installation. The unique design of the exhibition was developed by architect Arata Isozaki, who was inspired by the plan of Mikveh Israel Synagogue in Philadelphia (1961-72), a pivotal, unbuilt project by Kahn. After the Philadelphia premiere the exhibition will then embark on an extensive international tour, including major museums in Paris; New York; Gunma, Japan; Los Angeles; Fort Worth, Texas; and Columbus, Ohio. The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated, 448-page catalogue co-published by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and Rizzoli International.
