The Philadelphia Museum of Art is pleased to announce Sebastian Errazuriz: Double Take, a mid-career survey by artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz (b. 1977, Chile) that will explore Errazuriz’s multi-hyphenate practice spanning art, craft, design, and technology, from antiquity-inspired furniture to multimedia work informed by artificial intelligence.
The exhibition will present over 20 years of making, including early conceptual works that take nature and existing found objects as sources of inspiration, along with furniture, mirrors, and other products that the designer creates from appropriated and digitally manipulated Greco-Roman antiquities. Also on display will be a range of the designer’s “kinetic” cabinets, defined by their moveable elements. Errazuriz is interested in disrupting the idea that cabinets must consist of a box with two front doors, or "exploding the box," as the artist describes his approach. Instead, objects in Double Take propose a dynamic way of living with furniture that rotates, spins, and fans out in different directions.
About the Artist
Sebastian Errazuriz (Chilean, b. 1977) twists our typical expectations and experiences of furniture, lighting, and everyday objects. Embracing humor and appropriation, his limited edition and one-of-a-kind pieces often have an underlying subtext that goes beyond form or function: personal narratives,
political messages, cultural commentary.
His works have been exhibited at Kiasma, Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; and in art and design fairs globally, including the Armory Art Show in New York and Art Basel Miami Beach. His large-scale public art installations have been displayed in New York’s Times Square, the New Museum in New York, and Chile’s National Stadium. Errazuriz has been a guest speaker at Harvard’s Tech Lab, The Draper CEO Summit, Wired Magazine at the Tate Modern, Sotheby’s Contemporary Art, Art Basel’s USB Lounge, and the Museum of Art and Design in New York, amongst others. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Bloomberg, BBC, CNN, Vogue, and Architectural Digest.
He recently self-published his first book, IMAGINE Artificial General Intelligence (2025), on the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the creative industries.
