Villon made only two wood engravings. This small portrait appears to be his sister, Suzanne Duchamp. Unlike a woodcut, which is cut with a knife, wood engravings are made with a burin and are cut against the grain of the wood. The effect of a wood engraving is finer and more detailed than a woodcut, with closely worked fine lines that print white against black. Here, the figure seems to be covered by a veil of wavy parallel lines, an effect Villon later used in some of his etchings and drypoints.
