The Adoration of the Magi

Netherlandish (active Brussels), c. 1488 - 1542

Bernard van Orley was the court painter of Margaret of Austria, who was regent of the Netherlands and guardian of the future emperor Charles V. Van Orley had traveled to Rome and was acclaimed for his use of classical motifs. In this instance, the three kings or wise men visit the humble manger of the Christ Child in the midst of fantastic, imaginary architectural ruins.
