Still Life with Books and a Globe
Jan van der HeydenDutch (active Amsterdam), 1637 - 1712
Rather than illustrating a scene from the Bible, Van der Heyden painted the actual book, opened to the Song of Solomon. The globe and other, unidentified volumes indicate that this is a scholar’s desk. Van der Heyden himself owned an impressive library comprising 184 volumes, an exceptional number for a painter in the seventeenth century.
