Saints Peter and Andrew

Master of the Holy Kinship

German (active Cologne), active c. 1470/80 - c. 1515

Peter holds the keys to the kingdom of heaven; Andrew carries the X-shaped cross of his martyrdom. This composition belongs to a group of seven individual panels that together probably formed the predella, or base, of a lost altarpiece. Before it was dismantled, the predella would have displayed all twelve apostles flanking a scene of Christ and the Virgin Mary.
