Christ before Annas

Master of Cappenberg (Jan Baegert)

German (active Westphalia), c. 1465 - c. 1527/30

This panel probably formed the wing of a large altarpiece depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. The top was trimmed down but retains fragments of three scenes that preceded Jesus' questioning by Annas: the Last Supper (center), the Agony in the Garden (left), and the Arrest of Christ (right). According to the Gospels, Annas was the first of four judges to interrogate Christ after his arrest, followed by Caiaphas, Herod, and Pilate.
