Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness
Biagio d'Antonio da FirenzeItalian (active Florence, Rome, and Faenza), documented 1476 - 1504
John the Baptist is the patron saint of Florence, and each year on June 24 festive celebrations are held in his honor. Here, on this right wing of a diptych (a two-paneled painting that could be folded), he is shown in the wilderness wearing a camel-hair shirt.
