Christ in the Tomb and the Virgin
Niccolò di Pietro GeriniItalian (active Florence), first documented 1368, died 1415
This Pietà, or the dead Christ mourned by his mother, once adorned a wealthy family's burial chamber in Florence's All Saints' Church, known as the Ognissanti. Situated above the tomb, it presented an especially poignant image of loss.
