View of Verona with the Castelvecchio and Ponte Scaligero

Bernardo Bellotto

Italian (active Veneto), 1721 - 1780

The Venetian painter Bellotto lived and worked in Italian cities and abroad, helping to spread the tradition of Venetian view painting throughout Europe. Here, by painting a view of Verona from the river, he makes the city look remarkably like Venice.
