Summer Landscape
George InnessAmerican, 1825 - 1894
Travel in Europe exposed Inness to the peaceful, contemplative style of Italian landscape painting. In this work he captures the poetry of everyday life by focusing attention on the solitary cowherd and his animals. The artist uses both distance and shadow to create the feeling that one is viewing this intimate scene from beneath the shade of a nearby tree.
