Artist/maker unknownThe potters of the Gaya federation (42-562) developed the tunnel kiln, sometimes called the climbing kiln, which could reach 1,000 degrees Celsius or more. These high-temperature kilns made it possible to produce hard stonewares such as this one. The fabriclike impressions that decorate the lower half of this jar occurred in conjunction with the shaping of the rounded bottom, which the potter beat with a cloth-covered wooden paddle.
