In 1864 Rodin met Rose Beuret (French, 1844–1917), a seamstress who became his studio assistant, mother to their son Auguste-Eugène in 1866, and wife in 1916. The title of this work, which enigmatically refers to Beuret by another name, may relate to the enormously popular 1866 opera Mignon, in which the main character engages in a tempestuous love affair.
