This drawing likely relates to the 1880 commission for The Gates of Hell. The style is typical of nude studies from around that date, with the rapidly delineated musculature of the male bodies accentuated. While the subject matter is uncertain—the figures hold some indistinguishable object—the grouping of three interwoven male nudes anticipates The Three Shades, which Rodin invented by grouping three casts of The Shade and placing them atop The Gates of Hell.
