Rodin originally intended to place two decorative panels at the bottom of each side of The Gates of Hell (Philadelphia Museum of Art, F1929-7-128). The panels each contain a weeping girl in the center. These heads were intended to embody all of the sadness and anguish of the inhabitants of hell and were described as “contorted with pain and weeping unrestrainedly, with disheveled hair.”
