With this proposed project, Rodin won a competition for a monument to the Baroque painter Claude Lorrain (1600–1682) in the eastern French city of Nancy. The composition covered both the statue and the pedestal.
Lorrain, known for his dramatic sunlit landscapes, is shown painting outdoors and gazing upward. Below him Rodin placed a standard pedestal modeled to mimic the Baroque style of Nancy’s architecture. He embellished it with the Olympian god Apollo and his chariot bursting forth, pulling up the sun to start the day.
