Krishna Swallows a Forest Fire and Saves the Villagers
Artist/maker unknownThis illustration comes from a section of the Bhagavata Purana filled with demonstrations of Krishna's infinite divine power. As the villagers slept--exhausted from their recent confrontation with Kaliya, the water serpent who had been poisoning their lake until Krishna subdued him--a forest fire suddenly bursts out. Fueled by trees dried out by the hot season, the fire threatens to surround and overwhelm them. In desperation they turn to Krishna who, having compassion for their helplessness, sucks in and swallows the flames.
