The White Cow

Jan van de Velde II

Dutch, c. 1593 - 1641

While the dawn landscape is Jan van de Velde's own invention, he copied the group of peasants and animals on their way to market directly from a drawing by Willem Buytewech.

This engraving's title is an example of the penchant in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of collectors to assign distinguishing nicknames to favorite prints.
