Germination

Tokumaru Kyoko

Japanese, born 1963

Germination is a powerful articulation of the natural world, capturing a chaotic network of structures that make up an alien-like yet naturalistic form. Referencing the cosmic tree or axis mundi, plants are often used as symbols of the sky (branches), earth (trunk), and underworld (roots). Like many of the works in the artist’s ongoing series entitled Cosmic Plants, Germination depicts a rhizome sending out roots and shoots in an explosion of new life. Kyoko Tokumaru describes her work as an accumulation of texture driven by inner intensity. She strives to bring vitality and dynamic energy to her sculpture.
