Artist/maker unknownFrechen jugs decorated with the face of a bearded man come in many different sizes. Commonly known as Bartmann (bearded man) jugs, they traveled far and wide. The fragments of a large vessel similar to this one, also featuring a twisted handle and reliefs of coats of arms on the body, were excavated from the site of a seventeenth-century colonial fort in Pemaquid, Maine.
