Tivoli, with its waterfalls, grottoes, and picturesque ruins--and located just a short horse ride from Rome--was a favorite haunt of Northern landscapists in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This print, etched by the German artist Dies, provides an accurate picture of the position of the famous temples at Tivoli. In rendering the true position of the temples, Dies could not show the spectacular waterfall just out of sight in the gorge below.
