Sideboard

Beginning in the late eighteenth century, sideboards were made for rooms specially designed for dining. Rotating bottle holders located inside the end pedestals held wine and liquor, while the top surfaces displayed the silver, china, glass, and other objects used in presenting and serving the many courses of an elaborate meal. This particular sideboard was made in Philadelphia in about 1815 and represents the American Empire style, which is distinguished by the imitation of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art forms.
