Baskets in silver were uncommon before the 1730s. While largely referred to in period accounts as bread baskets, they were intended for a variety of uses. William Cripps was one of the most important silversmiths working in the English Rococo style, and he counted many of England's notable families among his clientele. The coat of arms is that of Lambert of Lyston Hall, Essex.
