Alabama Cotton Tenant Farmer's Wife

Walker Evans

American, 1903 - 1975

This woman is identified as Annie Mae Gudger, although the name is fictional to protect her privacy. Evans was unconcerned with the specific biography of his sitter, but rather wanted her portrait to function as part of his larger project to document American society in the 1930s.
