Alexey Brodovitch

American, 1918 - 2006

An American photographer and graphic designer, Brodovitch (1898-1971) was famous as the art director of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958 and was an influential teacher to a generation of photographers. He operated his Design Laboratory at the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) from 1936 to 1940, where he counted Arnold Newman and Irving Penn among his students. Brodovitch later taught at the New School for Social Research and the American Institute of Graphic Arts, both in New York, where his students included Richard Avedon and Diane Arbus.
